JR is an Architect and the HFS Capital Planning and Sustainability Manager at the University of Washington, doing what he calls “compost modern architecture”.
JR studied at the University of Illinois, Ecole des Beaux Arts in Versailles and Georgia Tech, and currently focuses on new green student housing apartments for the UW. He has also done mixed use and housing projects, as well as hospitals, K-12 and miscellaneous UW classroom projects.
JR previously facilitated the green building program for UW Capital Projects Office and has been involved in several UW committees including: the Environmental Stewardship Advisory Committee, the Conservation Project Development Team and the UW Climate Action Plan. His interest is creating a culture of sustainability within Housing and Food Services, as well as the University of Washington.
JR also lived at the Findhorn Foundation in Moray Scotland for four years, where he was primarily involved in building, maintenance and design, but also helped organize two “eco village” conferences.
Lastly and most importantly for JR is being a grandfather, which he says heightens his concerns about climate disruption and fossil fuel use, and has made him into a "climate hawk".
